Culture at MYOB

Please describe your company's culture both in the office and after hours. Let us know about the structure and hierarchy, cooperation and teamwork, and socialising amongst colleagues.
The company is divided up in 4 main departments, each with their own nations, tribes and crews. There is hot desking so no managers or team leaders are in a separate office, everyone works in their team together. There is a lot of emphasis on teamwork, mob sessions, pair work etc. There are social activities organised throughout the company like board-game nights and there are other clubs as well. Also there are loads of Slack channels for various interests that anyone can join and contribute to, and one specifically for Friday night drinks at the local pub.

The structure is organised into the different client sectors, and within those sectors each team is organised into crews/tribes/nations, similar to the Spotify model. Collaboration is highly emphasised and mentoring is always encouraged. There are board game nights and many slack channels to join for socialising. The start and finish times and work from home arrangements are flexible and there is good work-life balance.

Very fun and chill. Casual dress every day. Employees are empowered trusted (no micromanaging). Every gets along. Regular catch ups outside of work including board games night or a pub sesh.

The proteges in the programme range from university graduates, to boot campers, to career switchers. This creates a wildly diverse cohort but all with the same desire to learn and become great software craftsmen. Within the proteges, we collaborate and move through the programme together while also having our own individual learning journeys. Our direct manager looks after the programme at large and is always available and keeping us updated. An important aspect of the programme is in meeting various people around the business to find out more about the different roles that make MYOB succeed. The people that we have met range from senior leadership, technical leaders, non-technical leaders, and various software team members.

Fantastic culture that is accepting of all religions, race, genders, etc. They celebrate International Women's Day. As proteges, we had to organise meetings with senior colleagues (to have a better understanding of what they do) and everyone we approached have been most helpful and accommodating.

Hours are generally 9-5pm but they are flexible, you are able to start earlier and end earlier. Everyone is friendly and approachable.

The company has exceeded my expectations of company culture both in and out of office hours. Everyone is more than happy to chat and answer questions, no matter their role in the company and it is nice to have socials as well as consistent communication within the circle of proteges outside of the office.

Don't have a clear hierarchy, people like to be challenged. We value different opinions from individuals, and work closely with each other. We have after hour social activities, it is not compulsory, no one says a word if you don't want to.

The company constantly employs like-minded individuals that create a safe and comfortable space to come to work. There is a large effort to have the company mingle with others.

People have clear role in this company, but there is no such a hierarchy. Even you are a graduate like me, you can still speak up if you think someone is wrong, or you just have different opinions.

Socialising is a pleasure, the culture is very inclusive and positive. General hierarchical structure is avoided and the workplace promotes learning through everyone's behaviours and skillset - no matter their experience.

MYOB values a good work-life balance, so work hours are kept pretty standard. The company understands that people who have the chance to socialise together work better together, so there are opportunities to socialise during work hours so that you don't have to socialise with work colleagues after hours if you don't have time. Also, there are some people who are keen on attending meetups together or seeing a band or grabbing a drink together after hours, as well as board games clubs and similar that meet at the office after hours if that is your jam. The technical leadership in the company are approachable and helpful, always happy to make time to answer questions or give advice, and I've learnt a tremendous amount from them.

Super happy to help out with anything, very supportive. They have a pool table and people are encouraged to have a break if they need.

Structure: Crews (teams) - Tribes (collection of tribes) - Nation (collection of tribes) - Organisation (collection of nations) The culture is great during work hours. Executives that are in the Auckland office are friendly and approachable. I am in Collaboration tribe so there are many opportunities for me to collaborate with the other crews around me to learn new things and solve problems. I don't socialise too much outside of work because I live quite far away but sometimes I attend a monthly social gathering with the other Graduates.
