What's your job about?
I am part of the Cyber & Intelligence (C&I) solutions team at Mastercard working in a product management function within the team. Firstly, the C&I team at Mastercard have a raft of products keeping banks, merchants, and cardholders safe from fraud, identity theft, cybercrime, and other operational risks. As part of the C&I team, I have no set day-to-day but rather I engage with a variety of stakeholders across the business ranging from senior leaders that guide strategy out of our regional headquarters, to account managers who work closely with our customers to ensure that they are getting maximum utility from our solutions. It is a cross-functional role as we bridge the technical capability knowledge gap of products with the business needs of our customers by enabling our internal stakeholders. For me, that means I could work on projects such as building out a go-to-market strategy for a product, aligning it with the regional goals, and supporting account managers and sales teams to execute the strategy. Another example would be to understand product performance and analytics to see where we could further improve our solutions in the product development cycle. Ultimately, I work with a variety of teams and in different projects where I am constantly learning.
What's your background?
I am Punjabi Sikh born and raised in Sydney, Australia. Growing up in Sydney’s North West, I attended Normanhurst Boys High School and the University of New South Wales completing a double degree with a Bachelor of Commerce/Bachelor of Science. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to work in New York City, where I developed a North American expansion strategy for a multinational company. This gave me the opportunity to see what it was like working with another culture and in a foreign environment, an opportunity I believe everyone should try if they can. I started at Mastercard as an intern, where I joined the core products and strategy team and developed a go-to-market strategy and playbook for a new product. This gave me exposure to senior leadership strategy and the chance to work on a pivotal product for the business. I decided to come back as a graduate to Mastercard and now have a similar role in the Cyber & Intelligence Solutions team. It has been amazing so far as Mastercard has been supportive in my growth as a young professional where I constantly learn as Mastercard extends well beyond payment technology.
Could someone with a different background do your job?
I come from a science and commerce background from my university studies, I would say this gave me a fundamental understanding of business and began the development of my analytical and critical thinking skills which are the basis of all work we do at Mastercard. Are these skills only found in my background? Of course, not, there are many paths that lead to the development of these skills. It is important to have them and constantly develop those skills as well as other professional skills such as stakeholder management, project management, and communication skills. Essentially, my role is not specific to my background but rather the skills I have developed as part of my degree, extracurricular activities, and past work experiences.
What's the coolest thing about your job?
The best thing as a junior joining Mastercard is the ownership and exposure which is only possible because of the enablement and support from colleagues, managers, and senior leadership. From one day, we are given exposure to senior leaders at Mastercard, and the ability to influence product strategy and with guidance take ownership of a product. This gives me the opportunity to work with all teams at Mastercard from franchise and compliance to sales and account management, providing exposure to all aspects of the Mastercard team in Australia, the region, and the globe.
